Video-Game Maker Puts Animation to a Different Use

The 3D animation in the “Grand Theft Auto” series gained its success from the glorification of the street life of southern California. It has sold more than six million copies since its release in 2004. It is the bestselling game in video-game history.

Computer animation can generate more than just profits in the video-game industry. Criticized by conservative groups everywhere for the sex-and-drugs based content of its computer animation, Rockstar has become infamous. But the company is about to respond with a different kind of video game.

‘Bully’ a New Use for Video Game Animation

The 3D animation depicted in Rockstar’s new game “Bully” features no car theft, no drug sales, and no sex, just a classic social scenario at schools all across the country.

The animation in “Bully” focuses on a new 15-year-old student at a co-ed private school. The storyline follows his integration into the school system, as he meets and interacts with each stereotypical group—nerds, jocks, girls, teachers, and more.

Video-Game Animation Used for Good

Unlike the “Grand Theft Auto” series, the 3D animation in “Bully” is used to support positive values. Bullies are the enemies; beating them up and protecting their victims is the focal point of the game. Harassing younger kids at school is not allowed.

Even oversleeping is discouraged. In a brilliant use of computer animation, one scene shows the main character sleeping in too late, and for the rest of the day, his energy level is decreased and he acts sluggish. Rockstar has certainly changed their tune this time around.
