The Value of Animation Training in Today's Multimedia World

The Bureau of Labor Statistics report that graphic designers with experience in web design and animation will have the best job prospects in the years ahead. Find out why animation training is important and how you can get it.

Growth in the multimedia industry has been brisk in recent years as more and more people are playing video games. Meanwhile the Internet, cable television, and cinema continue to drive demand for multimedia entertainment. All of these forms of media incorporate some type of animation. Websites increasingly rely on Flash animation to create more interactive environments and games are becoming more stimulating to the user through the use of sophisticated animation technology.

What Does This Mean for Future Graphic Designers?

The BLS says it means such artists should focus on animation during their studies or apprenticeship programs. You can learn how to use animation and website development software, such as Flash, Dreamweaver, and Illustrator. Or you can become a pro in the art of hand-drawn animation. Many images are still hand-drawn and scanned into a computer where an animator can employ advanced computer generated image technology to apply anatomically correct movements to humans and other types of figures.

Where Do You Apply Your Animation Training?

Animation is used to drive all manner of business and entertainment entities. You might work for a multimedia company, such as an online newspaper or a large corporate entity such as Martha Stewart Living, Omnimedia or CNN Online. The demand for entertainment media is also behind the need for talented animators. Game companies are investing record amounts of money into games, building budgets and supporting large teams of full-time programmers and animators.

Animation Training: Where to Get It

You can refine your animation skills in a formal graphic design, multimedia, or animation degree program. Programs vary in length and content, so do your research to determine which one is best for you. If you wish to become a graphic designer, for example, focus on graphic design degree programs that allow you to take a few classes in animation. If you want to make movies or games, focus on an animation degree program in a film or interactive arts program.

With a degree and relevant training in animation, you may be well on your way to carving out a career that uses your creativity and technical skills.
