Shrek 2: Box Office Monster
As expected, Shrek 2 dominated the weekend box office, raking in an estimated $104.3 million since opening last Wednesday. That's second only to Spider-Man ($114.8 million) for the best opening weekend ever and easily beating the debut of Pixar's Finding Nemo. (Shrek 2 had the benefit of opening on 4,163 screens -- also a record.) After Sinbad and The Road to El Dorado, I'm sure Dreamworks is relieved to finally have a hit animated film again.
If you haven't seen it yet, it's worth noting that -- in addition to the usual trailers -- Dreamworks has actually put the first five minutes of Shrek 2 online for viewing. Pretty cool idea; it'll be interesting to see if this becomes a standard practice for more movies in the future.
