Animation Technology Helps Boy to Walk Again
From Canada's Globe and Mail comes an uplifting story of how animation technology has helped a young Alberta boy stricken with cerebral palsy walk again. The "gait lab" at Edmonton's Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital's Syncrude Centre for Motion and Balance uses a series of cameras and high-tech scales to create a computerized image of a patient's skeleton and muscles prior to surgery.
These computer animations give doctors a more accurate picture of what surgeries are needed to correct a movement problem; previously, it would often take multiple surgeries to correct such issues. Using the information from his gait tests, the boy had his hip adductors and hamstrings lengthened and can now stand up straight and walk again. Just a reminder than animation isn't all about fun and games...
