More Animation Jobs created for new Cartoon
In creating "The Boondocks," McGruder wanted a cartoon that was much different than most popular adult cartoon hits. He determined that to ultimately achieve something unique, he would have to change his animation style. He decided on using the anime style made famous by the Japanese. He liked this style because he thought it was more cinematic than what was currently being done in his show's genre. Unfortunately, this choice ultimately put more pressure on him. Most of the best anime animators are overseas, and the anime style is much more work intensive than prevailing styles. This meant that his budget had to accommodate more animation jobs, and his shows would ultimately take more time to create.
His Cartoon taught him about Hollywood
McGruder's success at landing his cartoon at the Cartoon Network didn't come immediately. He had been trying to sell his cartoon idea in tandem with selling his syndicated comic strip; he spent six years talking to various networks before he eventually landed the deal. He believes his ultimate success came because he learned a lot from earlier failures. Fortunately, McGruder was lucky due to the success of his comic strip, which enabled him to wait for the right deal to come along.
