Disney/Pixar Partnership may effect Animation Job Market
Computer Animation Collaboration Probably a Good Decision
Pixar definitely got the jump on Disney by producing cutting edge computer animation movies. Disney was late to embrace computer animation, but when it did, Pixar had some good reasons to be worried. Although they may have been making cooler animation, Disney was much larger and had more clout in the industry. This David and Goliath dynamic probably lead Pixar to team up with Disney a few years ago. They signed a distribution deal with their larger competitor and gave them the rights to produce some sequels to their popular movies.
Will Partnership Create a Glut in Computer Animation Jobs?
That deal didn't appear to affect the workforce demands of either company. Computer animation jobs were still on the rise, even with the collaboration between competitors. Industry analysts are beginning to speculate that the continued collaboration between Disney and Pixar may eventually lead to a merger or buyout. This event would effectively kill the competition, and seemingly create a glut of animators that would eventually have to be culled. Those with 3d animation jobs in either company, or those hoping to land a Pixar or Disney computer animation job down the road may see this enhanced collaboration as a potential job threat.
