A Career in Animation: Producing

Don Hahn has produced some of the greatest animation features in history, from Beauty and the Beast to the 3D version of The Nightmare Before Christmas. He recently told Toon Zone online magazine how his career in animation took off, and what it’s like to produce animation features.

His latest production is Meet the Robinsons, a CGI event that follows the story of a young inventor from a special family. He says that the best animation features are the ones “for that 6-year old and also for the 86-year old.”

Animation Production

Animation producers oversee the business and financial decision-making that goes on behind the scenes of an animation feature. Producers coordinate and hire personnel, negotiate deadlines and release dates, and oversee the general production of the animation. There are many animation jobs in animation production, from being a producer, to assisting, budgeting, marketing, and more.

The average producer made over $75,000 per year two years ago. A producer’s earnings will vary widely, depending on the animation feature, studio, and other factors.

While there may not be a degree program in “Animation Production,” animation school students will still find that an animation degree is vital to a career in animation. Building a foundation in animation history, technique, software, and the industry becomes the stepping stone in a career in animation.
